Urgent Relief Needed In The Philippines After Typhoon Haiyan
A MOMENT IN HISTORY: "Authorities say at least 2 million people in 41 provinces have been affected by Friday's historic Typhoon. Philippine newspapers are reporting 10,000 dead. Large areas along the coast have been transformed into twisted piles of debris, blocking roads and trapping decomposing bodies underneath. Ships are tossed inland, cars and trucks swept out to sea and bridges and ports washed away." (via cbsnews.com)
OUR TEAM: ORA New Zealand has first response teams ready for action through our local and international partners ORA Network, PROJECT AK-47, LAMP Foundation Philippines, Just Projects Philippines Foundation and church networks. Together we will launch a rapid relief program immediately.
In September our partners teams were in Zamboanga, Mindanao with 130,000 refugees displaced by fighting. In October they worked in Bohol where the earthquake struck. Now in November, our hearts are moved by the suffering caused by the massive strike of Typhoon Haiyan.
THE ACTION PLAN: In the short term, we have teams on the ground already bringing critical aid like water, food and medicine to those affected. As we go forward will assess the situation and choose areas that are under the radar but that have critical needs. Building for the future, we plan to target very hard hit areas where the New People's Army is known for using child soldiers. We hope to build a relational bridge of goodwill with them for further rescue and preventive work for children.
